Welcome
to the home page of the Homer Spit Comprehensive Plan.

The City of Homer is preparing this Plan for the Homer Spit in order to describe a preferred future development plan and recommend public improvements for this unique and special place.  USKH, Inc., an Alaska-based planning and design firm, has been contracted to assist the City with the planning process.

The issues
The Homer Spit is one of Alaska’s best known tourism destinations and has experienced growth and development in recent years.  As a result, the City of Homer is dealing with increasing traffic congestion, parking issues and new demands for public services on the Spit.

About the Plan
The Spit is a mix of land uses and is many things to many people.  In addition to tourism, there is a thriving commercial fishing industry, and a myriad of marine industrial uses.   Planning for future growth, resolving current issues, and maintaining the unique character of the Spit will, in large part, be determined by this planning effort.

The plan will be completed in the spring of 2010 and will address future land use, parking, pedestrian issues and conservation.  The plan will serve to guide future community decision-making on the Spit for years to come.
The Planning Commission and City Council want as much citizen participation as possible in this planning project, and the process will include a number of opportunities.   This project website has been developed to offer plan materials, public meeting notices and other information about the project.  The website also provides a direct email link to the project consultants so that citizens can comment directly to the project consultants.  Please refer back to this page for more information in the coming months.
